Ep#107 [Part 1] How to Build a 6-Figure Business That Works For Your ADHD Brain (Not Against It)

Kristen Werner & Mia Steel Season 1 Episode 107

Send us a text

What if your business didn’t punish your brain for being Multi-Brilliant?

In this episode, we pull back the curtain on how two neurodivergent founders built a six‑figure brand by ditching rigid business rules and designing a digital ecosystem that actually works with their brains not against them.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify the dopamine‑driven build‑and‑burn cycle so many ADHD entrepreneurs fall into.
  • Do a quick alignment check before chasing shiny ideas (and avoid burning everything down).
  • Replace “busywork” like fonts and feeds with what actually moves the needle traffic, leads, and conversion.
  • Shift your mindset from “I failed” to “I collected data” so you can build self‑trust, not shame.
  • Create sustainable content rhythms that work with your energy instead of forcing consistency.
  • Use TikTok as your top‑of‑funnel discovery tool to grow visibility fast and authentically.
  • Design a pivot‑proof personal brand anchored in your throughline — the belief you challenge, the transformation you deliver, and the method you teach.

No 5 a.m. routines. No 17‑step funnels. Just honest, repeatable systems you’ll actually maintain.

If the word “niche” makes you claustrophobic, this episode hands you the permission slip to build breadth with integrity and depth that compounds over time.

SPEAKER_01:

Are you ready to master the art of creating content that converts? Hey, I'm Mia, a mum of two, who went from being a burnt-out ambo to six-figure content creator in less than a year or while never getting a late ADHD diagnosis.

SPEAKER_02:

I'm Kristen, also a mum of two, and a former corporate branding queen to an entrepreneur. My dyslexic brain sees marketing very differently, and that's my superpower. And together we're showing women like you how to master video marketing and create content that generates income. Whether you're just starting out or ready to scale, we are breaking down everything from landing brand deals to building your own empire.

SPEAKER_01:

Welcome to I Am That Content Creator Podcast, where we tend scroll stopping content into serious income. No filters, no fluff. Just real strategies from two neurodivergent mums who get it. So let's turn your phone into a video marketing machine. And let's go!

SPEAKER_02:

Let's go.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, let's look. We're done.

SPEAKER_02:

And we are here to help you understand what is possible to move into a six-figure digital ecosystem designed for evolution. And when we say that, we say it because we are human, we will change. We were not meant to do one thing one way all the time. Some people, maybe, that's their neurotypical style, and that's okay. But as some neurodivergent people as I feel we all maybe are, whether you're diagnosed, undiagnosed, or just multi-passionate as fuck, like I am, and apologies, we do swear, we get passionate, it happens. This is to show you that it's okay to be multi-passionate, it's okay to shift, it's okay to evolve, it's okay to move. And let this be a permission slip for you to do. Why are you here today? Maybe you hate your job. Um, maybe you want to stay at home with the kids more often. Maybe you're stuck in growing your business and you don't know what moves to take next. You might be just generally curious, or you have failed multiple times and hey, there is no failure in our crowd. You can't fail because everything you do is just a stepping stone towards something bigger, something different, a learning, a life lesson. So you can't fail, but we'll call it failure because we're just doing that. You're interested to see how some ADHD coaches and mentors are doing it with our own method in our own way that is working and continues to work time and time again. Um, you may not be diagnosed, I'm not, but um, I do have lyslexia and I am multi-passionate. I'm a manifesting generator, so built to do many things. And you may just have some really, really big fucking goals and you want to hit them, and you're wondering how you do that. So that's maybe why you're here. But we want to play a little cheeky game.

SPEAKER_01:

If any of these hit, if any of these are a yes, just put a why in the comments. And if you hit about nine of them, then you're definitely in the right place. So I'm gonna read out a few things and then yeah, let's see who resonates with some of this. So you think you fit into the neurodivergence spectrum somewhere. Like Kristen said, you might you diagnose, you might not, but you you think differently. You've got a million business ideas running through your veins at once. You feel deep down that you're made for something bigger, and you just can't shake that feeling that deep down it's just like, yeah, it's just I'm meant for something big. You can't hold a job down for the life of you. You hate being micromanaged and following other people's rule books. You've started multiple businesses but seem to pivot before you make any progress or stable income. You've got big ideas, but you don't know how to execute them. You're either deep in hyperfocus or stuck in task paralysis. You can build an entire website in a day, but you can't pay a bill on time or keep on top of the laundry. You see things very differently to most people. The word niche makes you feel claustrophobic. Uh, you want to build an income that suits your energy cycles. You wanna you're a fast thinker and everyone's supposed to be here. You want to build income that suits your energy cycles and you're okay with taking big risks. Um, you're not here for a quick fix and you want to build a long-term sustainable income. So there's a few more here, but I'm pretty sure everyone.

SPEAKER_02:

You're in the absolute right place because we're about to just shake some shit up and let you know that you don't have to do it a typical way, and that we've done it several times over, and it's taken us a bit to be like, oh, we just have some method in our madness. This is fucking work.

SPEAKER_01:

A few ways, yeah. And so what we're not about around here, you know, giving you advice that we can't stick to ourselves. Um, you know, we're not reading off somebody else's playbook. This is a stuff that we've done and we've worked through as neurodivergent entrepreneurs. We're not making out like this is a walk in the park. This is not a quick thing. It it's work. No 5 a.m. ice bath journaling or rants about consistency. We're not about that. No complex funnels, 17-step frameworks. We're not going to sell your fake dream of us in our bikinis in Bali saying that you only got to work two hours a day. No glamorous, perfected content, beige Instagram strategies, you know, no real transitions and hours and hours of editing and content, none of that. And no dismissing that, you know, you've got a life, you've got kids, hormones, maybe you've got complex living situations, chronic illnesses, multiple things going on. We don't dismiss that because that's life and you need to build your business around your life. And no pushing you into building businesses that's just not suited to the way that you're wired. That's not what we're about here.

SPEAKER_02:

Discover why traditional marketing and that advice isn't always sustainable for our kind of brains. It's it's great and there's a method to it, and yes, it's needed, but there are ways to manipulate it and change it and use it to your advantage. How you can crush your limiting beliefs and stop hustling and stop the scrolling and actually start taking big action that's built for you. How to discover your deep why. And this is one of my favorite things to do. We do it inside our community often. We maybe need to go back to it more and more because when you do this work, this can be the foundation anchor point for you. How to build a dynamic personal brand that is pivot-proof. So we're often told we shouldn't pivot or shiny object, or we're going to show you how to build a personal brand that you can pivot with and you can grow from and it stays strong the whole time. Why creating content works with your brain, not against it, and um like how to create the key to the longevity of that content creation. It's not just a quick, fast win. This is how you do it for the long term, and how to build a six-figure digital ecosystem that evolves with you.

SPEAKER_01:

So you're probably familiar with the dreaded dopamine trap. I've been in this, I'm sure you have. Drop in the comments if this feels like you, you know, you get this shiny idea and you're like, oh, this is the best thing. Like, people are gonna love this. This is this is it, this is gonna be the one that makes me rich. And then you dive in and you start hyperfocusing, building it out, like just loving stick on it. And then you put it up on your website and just kind of nothing happens. And then you might get a few sales or no sales, and then the reality of a business kind of hits, and you're doing the ad mini stuff and just nothing's happening. The dopamine crashes and you ditch the whole idea, and then you start again with a new idea. And this sort of goes around. And I've been through this cycle many a times in my entrepreneurial journey, and it's a problem for our brains because it really affects our trust. We don't trust ourselves anymore because we've just kept going in this cycle and we lose faith that something's gonna work, and it really affects our limiting beliefs. So we want to get you out of that dopamine trap and understanding your brain and working with your brain, not just doing this because the typical advice says choose one thing, do it again, do it again, do it again, do it again. And that just doesn't work for our brain. All right, and so these little brain funks, we'll like to call them, they're really common, but they do cost us time and money. So these are a few things that you might be doing that are keeping your keeping you stuck or keeping your business under$10,000 a month. So trying to niche yourself down or put all of your eggs into one basket because that's the only way you think you're gonna succeed. Taking typical marketing advice as the only way to do something. You know, you you follow their rule books and it really starts to affect your business. Like you didn't build a business to be stuck in a jail, like you built it to have freedom. Jumping too fast into new ideas before doing an alignment check, and we're gonna show you how to do an alignment check as well. Skipping over the deep fundamental work, which we're gonna go into today, required for this longevity, focusing on the busy work instead of the money-making work. That's a big one for us. We like to do the fonts and the canvas and all the little bits and pieces, and we forget to do the things that are really driving your business forward and getting the results. And ditching businesses too soon when all they needed was just more traffic and more leads. So we're gonna talk about that as well.

SPEAKER_02:

We say this because we've been through these moments. So we don't say this because we've heard it from somewhere and let's not do that. Like we've been through them. We've been there, we've seen it, we've felt it, and then we've moved through. And we've done it a few times that now we see a pattern, and now we know how you can move past that pattern. And now we can show you with the tools inside the community how we can get you guys through that. And that's what's really exciting. So often, lack of self-trust and condition to follow social norms. So we end up ignoring those signals to do it differently, and we try to stick in the same lane and do it like everybody else, because that's how I should do it. That's what the guru says, that's what the person that I follow says I should do. But they don't often think like you, and they don't often feel like you, and they haven't been through your life lessons and your journey. And so it's really about you understanding and leaning into your intuition and knowing what's right for you and your business and where you want to go, because that is very different to somebody else. So it's okay that it doesn't look the same as everybody else. And as multi- if you're a multi-dimensional human being, which we all are, and right here in this room, I think we're a little bit more multidimensional than some. And so the typical business advice that's suited for a neurodivergent human being that's just kind of a bit a little channeling our chaos in terms of all the ideas and they're all there, and we start to think that's too many, and I can't do them all, and I'm gonna fail and I'm no good at it, it's okay because there are ways that we can channel this energy so that we're not doing it like a robot that it's one way, do it this way and do it this way. And if you don't do it this way, you've failed and you're no good at it. And it's it's you can't go and copy and paste somebody else's strategy and somebody else's way they're doing it because it just doesn't work that way. And that's what we want to make sure we break open for you to show you that trying to do it somebody else's way is stopping you, it's paralyzing you and it's creating a fear about you ever achieving it because you don't think you can get there, but maybe you haven't tried just to kind of loosen it a little bit, step back from it and think about how you can get there in a way that's good for you and the way that you think.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. And even if you do do build a business, you know, the very neurotypical way and you are making money, you don't want to build a business where it feels like a jail. And you're otherwise, you'll just you'll get over it, you'll burn out. So again, stop trying to fit yourself into a square hole if you're around. So every time you find yourself in that dopamine trap starting from scratch, every time you burn an idea down, it's costing you time and money because you're trying to fit yourself into somebody else's box that wasn't made for you. So again, it's a bit like the dopamine trap, you know, you got too many ideas, you get the big dopamine highs, and then you get the paralysis when you're, you know, in that valley of despair where you're like, I'm stuck, I'm overwhelmed, I can't do this. Then you see another shiny object on the internet or TikTok that, oh, everyone's making a million dollars doing this, maybe I'll do that. And then it's just this cycle of little side quests, burning them down, side quests, burning them down. So we want to get you from that into a nice long-term business that, yes, there are gonna be troughs and valleys and all that sort of stuff, but we want it to be a long-term projected outcome without having to burn down all these things along the way. And yes, we're gonna talk into, you know, maybe retiring offers or refining them or changing them and evolving them, but you're not gonna feel like you're just stuck from starting from scratch every time you have a new idea.

SPEAKER_02:

And it's also just looking at that as the long term. Like if you look back at this one, you can see they're short, quick hits. And I know that we need those dopamine hits, and that's what we strive for. And so we do that and we do it and we condense it. But if we're able to work with who we are, what we stand for, and and our and our deep wire, which we're gonna go into, you've got the ability to do the long term. And this is why this is not a quick fix, this is not an overnight success. This is building a long-term sustainable foundation for you as a neurodivergent human being that will change. We know you're gonna flip, we know you're gonna change, and that's okay. How can we do it that supports you at the pivot point and allows you to back that idea and go for it or go, great idea, probably not gonna make me money. I'm just gonna do that as some fun, but I'm gonna keep going on this path. So that's the difference.

SPEAKER_01:

It's long and it's slow, but it does get you there. So the unique struggles of neurodivergent brains that we have in business. So, you know, you'll be familiar with all this sort of stuff. You know, we we just think differently and we have unique struggles. So if you go and buy a course or you take a lecture or something and it's very neurotypical, and they're telling you to do things like this, this, this, and this, we're gonna struggle a lot more than the neurotypical brain because of these struggles. So we need to acknowledge these struggles and accept them and just work with them instead of against them in business. Otherwise, we're gonna burn ourselves out and we're gonna get stuck in all the things. So, what we teach and how we teach it in this is gonna be working with those struggles.

SPEAKER_02:

If any of this has ever come across your mind, I know we've said it before, we've said other things that, you know, it's it's that really difficult part of being an entrepreneur that we often find ourselves in struggle with. And so what we're gonna do is an exercise with you guys in a minute that's gonna help you just see the light through this and maybe shift the way you think about some of these things. Because it's really important that we shift this mindset. Because if we don't shift this mindset, then we really keep ourselves in a place where the six-figure digital product, you know, it's not coming unless we really take action on what's going on in here. And like I said, with that way I love move your body for mental health, because when our mind takes over, it will fucking rule. And it will tear you down tenfold. And until you can get across that and enough to know when you're saying things that you can go, hang on a minute. Oh, that's that's her. She's not being nice today. But if we can't identify that and bring that to the forefront, then we're not gonna be where we want to go.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. And we want you to get really fucking vulnerable with this. If you're kind of just surface level and just not really going into it, it's not gonna work well. We want you to get really vulnerable. We did this in another boot camp of ours last year, and you know, people were crying. Like it really hits you when you do this work, and we'll take you through an exercise in a minute. So this whole valley of despair, you know, a few of you said that, yep, that's everything, that's me, yep, to it all. You know, this is why it happens. So we've got all these beautiful, brilliant ideas, but it becomes overwhelming and we can't choose one. We sort of lean into this perfectionism and fear is because we're in this research mode all the time and we're not taking any action because we think it's got to be perfect before we do the thing. We hyperfocus, so we build really fast and then burn out easily. We've got inconsistent systems, which sort of causes us to fall off the marketing, lose momentum, get stuck in that sort of task paralysis. The imposter syndrome, huge for us. We second guess everything and we've got really low confidence. And we're dopamine seekers. So all this noise on social media, the shiny objects, the overconsumption, we've got to be really careful with that. And we need to learn how to manage that. And we're not saying we don't want you to build a business that gives you dopamine, that's what we're trying to do here. Just know that there's a lot of noise and a lot of things going on, and we just have to pull ourselves back, which is an exercise that we're gonna do with your DY, it's gonna pull you back.

SPEAKER_02:

And so, what we want to do now is for you to grab a blank piece of paper. So it's gonna be a shitty piece of paper, it's not to be anything fancy, a blank piece of paper. We're gonna give you five minutes just to sit and just to think about every thought, every negative thought, every loop that goes around your head of why you can't do something, why this didn't happen, why that didn't happen. Just getting it all out, the things that you've said to yourself, the things that I mean, hopefully you haven't had many negative people say things online, but shit it happens. But it's more about you, those thoughts that are going on in your head that might stop you from creating this thing, stop you from doing the thing. We want you to write them down. And so we're gonna give you some time to do it. And like Mia said, be kind with yourself on this one because we be vulnerable, but know that without doing things like this, the shift for you to move through this is even harder. And so if you're prepared to do this in a way that, and you don't have to share this with anybody, and we'll show you what we're gonna do with it after, but be honest enough with yourself so that you can see the fear that could be stopping you. And that's really, really important for us. So you've got that list in front of you. Now, I don't know if um the list was confronting to write or not. You're welcome to let us know. You can see that list in front of you, and you've got these potentially really negative things that you've said to yourself, this internal loop that keeps going around that keeps you stuck. Now I want you just for a minute, and as long as you're not driving, just shut your eyes. When you shut your eyes, I want you to imagine your best friend or your partner, someone you love. I want you to think about them and think, okay, I can see them, I can see where they are. Maybe we're a coffee shop. You know, maybe we're sitting down together in a coffee shop, or maybe I've called her on the phone, so I really need to speak to her. All right? Now I want you to imagine her. And she's peeked up the phone, she's so excited to speak to you. Oh, hey, how's it going? Now I want you to think that you just unleash on her that list. You let her know everything on that list. You're not good enough to do this. I don't know why. I don't know why you're showing up on social media. Who the fuck do you think you are to build a business online? So you said six figures. What does that even mean? Like I make six figures in my nine to five. Yeah, I hate it, yeah, I don't like it, but I make it. You're not good enough. Nobody wants to hear what you have to say. That was boring. That's nothing special. You've only got a hundred followers, no one cares. Imagine saying that to her. She's called you, you've called her, she answers as a friend excited to speak to you. Is that what you'd want to say to her? So I want you to open your eyes now. And I just want you to think for a minute. If you would not say this to her, why the fuck would you say it to yourself? And we do that to ourselves, and you're not wrong for doing that because me and I do it constantly and have to pull ourselves up, but it's come to a point now where that loop starts, and I go, Oh, it's five days to my period. That checks out. Yeah, I know why I'm saying that. Or I say that and I go, that's because we launched something and like crickets on Instagram. Oh, Instagram is now platform. Of course not. I'll go back to where I like to create content. So it's about stopping that. It's going to happen and it's okay if it happens. Please know that's okay. What we're doing today, what we do inside our community, what we will continue to do with you until you stick with us, until you leave. And then if you want to follow us later, we'll continue to be there, is to stop that loop. To show you that what you have got is special. And if there is one person on this planet that says yes to you, there is a hundred more following her up. Because she's just one person that went, Oh, you hit me at that time. You got me. You got yes, I'm here for it. And then you build on that and you build on that and you build on that. So if we're not gonna say it to our best per our best person, our best friend, our loved one, please make today the day you stop saying it to yourself. Or today is the day you go, okay, yep, I did say that. I was about to hit send on a piece of content, and I said that to myself. I'm I'm not. I'm not gonna say that. I'm gonna do this instead.

SPEAKER_01:

And if you want to hold a six-figure brand, a multi-six-figure brand, you need to get really good at getting yourself out of those loops because they will come, they come for us all the time. But we've learned to hold up. That's her, that's the ego, that's that little bitch on my shoulder. She's been a real monger all today. I've accepted it, I've acknowledged what she's had to say, and I'm gonna ignore it and put it to rest because I wouldn't say that to my best friend if she's trying to build a six-figure business. So, and when you don't trust yourself, how are other people gonna trust you when they're buying your products? So you're not broken, you're not unworthy, all this stuff is normal. You just haven't mastered how to work with your brain instead of against it.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay. And so it's time that we start looking at the things that are incredible about who we are, that are impactful about who we are. And they are things like we have big ideas, we think outside the box, we find unique ways to do things, we're risk takers, we're creative, we see patterns in things, we have good intuition, we hyperfocus. You can see the list. These are all things that are an asset to you as somebody that doesn't think like somebody else. You as a unique human, this is a huge asset to who you are. And we wanted to just put some examples of just four people that in this space that have ADHD, that are a little bit neurodivergent, that have made it work because of their beautiful brain, because the way they take risks and they work fast and they don't sit and think. They go, go, go. Have they failed? Yes. Has that failure led them to success? Yes. I mean, Kaylee Einstein, for example, she sold her business and then realized, hang on a minute, I actually would have fucking liked that business and bought it back for double what she fucking sold it for. If that's not ADHD in a nutshell, I don't know what it is.

SPEAKER_01:

But it's okay if that happens to you. And Richard Branson, by the way, he has 300 companies. 300. Not just one. He didn't just focus on one, he's got 300. So we really need to change our language when we speak to ourselves. So all the things on the left, you said to yourself before, but we want to start saying things on the right. I can't focus. No, I focus differently and intensely on what matters to me. I'm too scattered. No, I'm just exploring multiple opportunities. I failed again. No, I'm collecting data on what works and what doesn't work. I always procrastinate. Well, no, you just work best under certain conditions. Your interest-based brain. I'm behind everyone else. No, I'm on my own timeline. I should be further along. No, I'm exactly where I need to be to learn this lesson. Okay. And like what I said before, if you don't trust yourself, who's gonna buy from you to really work on this language? I'm not ready. No, I'm just ready enough to start. I don't know what I'm doing. I'm figuring this out as I go. I'm too distracted, I'm gathering inspiration from multiple sources. This is too hard. No, this is just challenging me to grow. I'm not disciplined enough. No, I'm building systems that work for my brain. I'm a mess, no, I'm a mess in I'm a work in progress. I can't compete with them. I bring something unique that they cannot replicate. And we're gonna show you how to build a personal brand that is just impossible.

SPEAKER_02:

I want you to take that piece of paper that you wrote all that stuff on and I want you to scrunch it up, rip it up, scrunch it up. I want you to throw it in the bin. Get it out of your sight. It's good to do this exercise every so often to actually remind ourselves of the thoughts that are going in our head. But once we've got them out, throw them out. And now we're gonna look at those things like that list before that make you worthy. The I am statements. I am is such a powerful thing to say. And when we do say it and we say it with conviction, this is the this is the kind of stuff that helps you when you're going in that spiral loop of I don't, you know, I'm not good enough, I can't post this to start going, I am worthy. I am, and start it with that. And it might just be a list of things that you know you're good at, that you love to do, that you would rather say to your friend, think about that friend, shut your eyes and think about her. And if she rang you and said, Oh my gosh, I'm, you know, I'm launching this business and nobody cares, and I wish I'd never started and I hate my job, what would you say to her?

SPEAKER_01:

And I used to also write these down and just put them on my computer in front of in front of them. So I had to read them every day. Because you've got to remind yourself of this a lot. I don't know if anyone's read the book Um by Eckhart Toll or Eckhart Tolle is Power of Now and The New Earth. He talks about this ego and you know, you're you're watching the thinker. So when you watch yourself think, just catch yourself. And it's something you have to practice all the time. If you don't practice it, your mind will run away into those stories. And the ego loves drama and it feeds off itself. So you get really good at catching catching it and stopping it before it spirals.

SPEAKER_02:

I am on my own exciting path. Yes, Jen, I am a great teacher. I'm creative and my artwork is unique to me. Absolutely. I'm here to thrive.

SPEAKER_01:

I'm excellent, creative art. I can't even say that word. Artesian. I'm a pioneer of others' healing. Ooh, I love it. I'm ready to put myself first. I'm ready to make changes. I am passionate. Love it, Chelsea. Free my mind to create ideas. Yeah, it's your mind. You're free to do whatever you want.

SPEAKER_00:

Love it. Kind of scary to think that 2026 is coming in three months. And imagine if you're in exactly the same place as you are now, where you're not getting the likes, you're not getting the follows, you're not getting the comments, and you're not getting the interaction from your audience, but you are putting in absolutely everything. We don't want that from you. We want you to blow up before 2026 so that 2026 is your freaking year. And did you know that TikTok is the number one platform for consumer discovery? That's beauty, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. So stop wasting time on the other platforms and put TikTok at top of funnel marketing.
